The History of HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC

HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC was founded in the beginning of 1998.

The idea was to establish an organization in Lithuania that could raise funds to support development for poor and disadvantaged people in the world. To do this through a network of shops selling second hand clothes and using the surplus from this activity for Humana People to People's project in the third world.

The first shop was opened in May 1998 and since then every year some new ones have been opened. Today this activity is very successful and HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC can support many very good projects in Africa and India while also being a source of good and fashionable clothes at very affordable prices for many Lithuanians.
The Development Program of HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC

HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC wants to see a world with better prospects for all its inhabitants to live their lives free from poverty, sickness and lack of freedoms.

HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC wants to support people's efforts to create development in their communities

HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC supports projects dealing with health, education and environment. Humana People to People Baltic believes that work within these areas is one of the main preconditions for development.
HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE BALTIC is a member of "The Federation for Associations Connected to the International Humana People to People Movement" and supports projects connected to the movement.

The international Humana People to People movement

Humana People to Peoples work is based on Solidary Humanism. Its projects contributes to ordinary peoples' efforts to help themselves and to develop their countries.

The Humana People to People Movement is a federation of  32 national benevolent organizations in North and South.

The main lines in the Humana People to People Projects are the following:
  • Child aid
  • Schools for children
  • Teacher training
  • Vocational training
  • Farmers training
  • Fighting HIV/AIDS
  • Fundraising

The work of Humana is widely acknowledged. It is supported by many national and international organisations among which are the Asian Development Bank, the International AIDS Center, UNICEF, the European Commission, World Bank; the Ministries of Foreign of ForeignAffairs of Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, USA; the Governments of Angola, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia; the provincial governments in Angola, China, India and South Africa; the city of Madrid; the companies Nokia, Johnson & Johnson and many others.

In the world today many people acknowledge the need and obligation to help the countries and peoples in the third world and especially in Africa. The United Nations has expressed this very clearly in its Millenium Development Goals ( MDG ). MDG represent a global partnership. Responding to the world's main development challenges and to the calls of civil society, the MDGs promote poverty reduction, education, maternal health, gender equality, and aim at combating child mortality, AIDS and other diseases.

Set for the year 2015, the MDGs can be achieved if all actors work together and do their part. Poor countries have pledged to govern better, and invest in their people through health care and education. Rich countries have pledged to support them, through aid, debt relief, and fairer trade.

Halfway to a 2015 deadline, there has been clear progress towards implementing the MDG. But their overall success is still far from assured.

The projects organized by Humana People to People cover many of these areas, and are very important in the development of the countries that need help. One example of this is the Teacher Training Colleges which train teachers for the rural areas another the projects fighting AIDS- Hope and TCE Total control of the epidemic.

For more information about these projects look at the  Humana People to People Movement homepage www. humana.org
